Gentlemanly Values Trump Narcissism

by Dana Raye Barnaby

In the first 30 days of Trump’s presidency, the world has seen a dramatic shift towards divisiveness. During his inaugural address, Trump declared his intent to implement rapid and significant policy changes, emphasizing that his administration would achieve feats “bigger than anyone has ever seen before”.

Sadly, his declarations have become our unfortunate reality. Fears of a trade war, economic insecurity, and the rise of oligarchs threatening the middle class have left many worried about the future.

Yet, amidst this turmoil, a figure of integrity and peace has quietly emerged. A true gentleman who is seemingly unifying our borders and bringing hope to the people.

An Unsuspecting Hero

Justin Trudeau has become the world’s unsuspecting hero - the Prime Minister of a little country, slightly north of the un-United States of America.  The neighbourly neighbor, largest trading partner, and trusted friend of our American cousins. Yes, the handsome and suave leader of the sovereign country that Trump now disrespectfully refers to as ‘the 51st state' may just be the chosen one to save us all from the tyrant.

And whether you agree or not with Trudeau’s politics in the past, it seems obvious to me that in those same 30 days, he has rallied the world around his gentlemanly values, thereby becoming a stark contrast to the narcissistic behaviors that are fueling a divisive world.

Trudeau has not only redefined what it means to be a world leader - but his actions of late, have rallied an entire nation to stand for unity and embrace what it means to be Canadian. I have never felt more patriotic than I do today - if I had a flagpole outside my loft, I would proudly be displaying the red and white colours of our strong and finally united nation. If you don’t believe me about our newly formed patriotism, watch the first 30 seconds of the 4 Nations Face-Off: Canada versus the U.S. game last weekend - quite the offensive.

It’s exciting to observe how we, as a nation, have rallied around a leader we almost dismissed - and then ask, why have we done such a thing? Well, I for one, believe it stems from the exact reasons why I even started this series of essays in the first place - because the world needs gentlemen and welcomes these universal principles of integrity, humanity, and cohesion, offering hope in an era overshadowed by chaos.

Trudeau’s leadership stands as a beacon, challenging the divisive forces at play and inspiring a vision of a more unified, peaceful world.

A Tale of Two Leaders: Division vs. Unity

From the moment Donald Trump descended his golden escalator, his leadership has been defined by self-interest, erratic decision-making, and a rhetoric of division. His ‘America First’ agenda is alienating allies, fueling economic uncertainty, and deepening domestic and global fractures. He has already withdrawn from international agreements, attacked the press as the enemy of the people,’ and has used disinformation as a political weapon. Under his administration, truth is becoming malleable, alliances fragile, and democracy itself increasingly strained.

Sadly, America's arrogance doesn't end with Trump. Vice President JD Vance recently insulted a German audience when he threw his political might behind the far-right AfD party - their version of Tucker Carlson and the White Boys.

The Financial Times reported, "Vance's speech backfired spectacularly, convincing many listeners that America itself is now a threat to Europe". This signals that Europe must begin the painful process of de-risking its relationship with the US. And this is exactly where our unsuspecting hero is stepping in - strengthening relations and helping reunify the EU over a shared distrust of Trump.

Justin Trudeau has emerged as a leader who champions unity, diplomacy, and gentlemanly leadership. While Trump is severing global ties, Trudeau is reinforcing them - doubling down on climate action, human rights, renewable energy trade initiatives, and international cooperation. Where Trump’s tactics rely on fear and polarization, Trudeau calls for inclusivity, respect, and a steady commitment to democratic values. As a result, discussions have even begun about the possibility of Canada joining the EU.

And in my opinion, that sounds like a much more appealing option than becoming the 51st state.

Trudeau’s gentlemanly approach is not just about political optics - it is about setting a standard for leadership that prioritizes collective well-being over personal ego. Whether it is standing up to authoritarian figures, advocating for marginalized communities, or ensuring that diplomacy remains the foundation of international relations, Trudeau has shown that strength is not measured by being the loudest voice in the room, but by how effectively one can unite a fractured world.

The Impact of Gentlemanly Values: A Path Forward

A world in crisis does not need more leaders who exploit division for personal gain - it needs leaders who embody the timeless principles of respect, integrity, and unity. The contrast between Trump and Trudeau is more than just a difference in policy - it is a case study in the power of gentlemanly leadership over narcissistic rule. This is the fundamental difference between a leader who views power as a tool for self-interest and one who understands that leadership is a responsibility to serve others.

It is we, the individuals who will undoubtedly suffer the consequences of this divided world.  I have so many friends that live just south of the 'artificially drawn line -  Trump's words. I care deeply for them all and nothing will change that. Booing the ‘American Anthem’ at home-ice hockey games or boycotting American whiskey (something I will begrudgingly do as my patriotic duty) will only create more division and add more fuel to Trump’s fire. I hate that we have come to this, as do many Trump voters - who are seriously wishing they could reverse the course of time, but we are now stuck with the ramifications.

As history unfolds, the world will continue to grapple with the consequences of Trump’s divisive reign. But amidst the wreckage of his administration, Trudeau’s policies are not just noble ideals, but essential principles for a stable and prosperous world.

In time -  and God willing - these values will not only triumph over narcissism but also inspire the next generation of leaders to choose unity over division, diplomacy over aggression, and integrity over self-interest.

Very well said Dana and thank you for offering words or insight a and optimism in dark times. Vertical striving for superiority and power over people has never been socially beneficial,

horizontal striving for community, connection and cohesion is the way we make a difference.

Trudeau just spoke at the closing of the Invictus games and his speech was heartfelt, inclusive and worth a watch/listen..
